About the Grass

Why St. Augustine Is the Most Requested Grass in New Orleans

St. Augustine grass sod lawn in New Orleans, Louisiana

St. Augustine grass is a low-growing grass with broad, flat blades and a deep green color. You find it mostly in tropical and subtropical regions along the Gulf Coast, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. It spreads by stolons, forming a dense mat that crowds out weeds in the lawn. It is a medium to high maintenance grass, meaning it wants moderate water and fertilizer to look its best. It is also one of the most shade tolerant grasses available in our region. St. Augustine grass stays lush and green until frost and is recommended for USDA plant hardiness zones 8 through 10, which covers all of South Louisiana.

LSU AgCenter, USDA, and university turf programs across the Gulf South all recommend St. Augustine for shaded and moderate-traffic Southern lawns. It is the most-planted warm-season lawn grass across coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle.

In our experience. St. Augustine outperforms every other grass we carry in Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish yards with mature tree canopy. Palmetto handles the deepest shade. Classic handles lighter shade at lower cost.

Care basics in South Louisiana

Water deeply once or twice a week in the heat of summer, more often during drought. Mow at 3 to 4 inches tall to keep roots shaded. Fertilize in spring and late summer with a balanced turf fertilizer. Watch for chinch bugs and brown patch, which hit St. Augustine harder than other grasses in humid stretches.

Cultivars

St. Augustine Cultivars We Carry

These are the primary St. Augustine cultivars we sell. Each one performs well in South Louisiana conditions.

01

Classic St. Augustine

The standard St. Augustine cultivar. Medium to high maintenance, good shade tolerance, dense growth. Our most common pick for general residential yards in Orleans and Jefferson Parish.

02

Palmetto St. Augustine

The most shade-tolerant cultivar we carry. Finer blade than Classic, slower to brown in cold. Best choice for yards with heavy tree cover, covered patios, or north-facing lots.

03

Raleigh St. Augustine

Cold-hardy cultivar developed for the upper South. Good for properties that see occasional hard freezes or sit in colder microclimates. Wider blade than Palmetto.

04

Seville St. Augustine

Semi-dwarf St. Augustine with a finer blade and denser growth. Handles partial shade well. Used for lawns that want a more manicured look without the maintenance of Zoysia.

Decision Helper

Is St. Augustine the Right Grass for Your Yard?

Pick St. Augustine if you have:

  • A yard with moderate shade from trees or buildings
  • Moderate foot traffic (kids playing, dogs, regular family use)
  • Willingness to water during dry stretches and fertilize 2 to 3 times a year
  • A budget that works with higher-maintenance grass

Pick a different grass if you have:

  • Full sun all day with heavy foot traffic (go Bermuda)
  • A yard where kids or dogs run hard daily (go Zoysia)
  • Low-maintenance priorities and full sun (go Centipede)

FAQ

St. Augustine Sod FAQ

How much St. Augustine sod do I need?

Measure length times width of your lawn area in feet to get square footage. Divide by 450 (the coverage of one pallet). Round up. Example: a 2,000 sq ft yard needs 5 pallets.

What is the best St. Augustine cultivar for shade in New Orleans?

Palmetto. It handles shade better than any other cultivar we carry. If you have heavy shade from live oaks or a north-facing lot, go Palmetto.

How long does it take St. Augustine sod to root?

Plan on 2 to 3 weeks of deep daily watering before roots take hold. Keep foot traffic off during this window. Full establishment takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Can I lay St. Augustine sod over existing grass?

No. Kill or remove the existing grass first. New sod needs contact with bare soil to root. Laying over live grass will cause the new sod to die.

When is the best time to install St. Augustine in Louisiana?

April through September is peak. You can lay sod year-round in South Louisiana, but warm-soil months give the fastest root-in and best establishment.

Does St. Augustine handle dogs and kids?

Moderately. It tolerates medium foot traffic but will wear in high-use areas. If your yard sees heavy daily play, consider Zoysia instead.
