Zoysia grass sod is a luxurious medium to fine blade grass with deep green color and a carpet-like growth and texture. It is fairly shade tolerant, adapts well to our South Louisiana climate, and stands up to family yard traffic from kids and dogs. Get the dark green carpet grass you have been looking for.
Zoysia is a low-growing, fine to medium blade warm-season grass that originated in East Asia. It spreads slowly by both stolons and rhizomes, which makes it dense once established and good at choking out weeds. It tolerates moderate shade better than Bermuda and stands up to traffic better than St. Augustine, which is why it is our most popular pick for family yards with mixed sun and shade. See how it stacks against the other warm-season grasses we carry. Zoysia is recommended for USDA plant hardiness zones 6 through 10, which covers all of South Louisiana. It is often used on golf course fairways, tee boxes, and athletic fields because of its dense growth and recovery rate.
In our experience. Zoysia is what we recommend for the family yard. Mixed sun, kids and dogs running, and you want a lawn that looks dense and feels good underfoot. Palisades is our most-delivered cultivar across the Westbank, especially Marrero and the surrounding subdivisions. Empire holds up best to dog traffic. Zeon is the finest blade if you want the manicured look.
Orleans Sod, Since 2014
Water deeply once or twice a week in the heat of summer, less often in spring and fall. Mow at 1.5 to 2.5 inches with a sharp blade. Fertilize lightly in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release nitrogen turf fertilizer. Zoysia is more drought-tolerant than St. Augustine and recovers faster from heat stress. Watch for brown patch and dollar spot in humid stretches, and large patch in cool wet weather.
These are the primary Zoysia cultivars we sell. Each one performs well in South Louisiana conditions.
The most-delivered Zoysia cultivar in our area. Medium blade, dense growth, strong shade tolerance for a Zoysia. Common pick for residential yards in Jefferson and Orleans Parish with mixed sun and shade.
Wear-resistant cultivar that holds up best to heavy dog and kid traffic. Slightly coarser blade than Palisades. Good fit for active family yards and properties with a regular pet routine.
Faster establishment than other Zoysia cultivars. Wider blade and quicker spread make it a fit for new construction lawns where you want full coverage faster. Good cold tolerance.
The finest blade Zoysia we carry. Manicured-lawn look with very dense growth. Higher maintenance and higher cost than Palisades or Empire. Used on residential lots that want a golf-course feel.

Measure length times width of your lawn area in feet to get square footage. Divide by 450 (the coverage of one pallet). Round up. Example: a 2,000 sq ft yard needs 5 pallets.
Empire or Palisades. Empire wears the best under heavy traffic. Palisades looks the best while still holding up to family use. If you want both density and traffic tolerance, Palisades is the most popular pick we deliver, common across Kenner and the surrounding Jefferson Parish neighborhoods.
Plan on 2 to 3 weeks of deep daily watering before roots take hold. Keep foot traffic light during this window. Full establishment takes 4 to 6 weeks. Zoysia roots a bit slower than St. Augustine but locks in tighter once it does.
Moderately. It tolerates light to medium shade but will thin out in heavy shade under live oaks. For yards with deep shade, go with St. Augustine instead. Palmetto St. Augustine is the deep-shade pick.
April through September is peak. You can lay sod year-round in South Louisiana, but warm-soil months give the fastest root-in and best establishment. Avoid laying right before a hard freeze.
Usually yes. Zoysia runs at the higher end of our pallet pricing because it is a denser, slower-growing grass that takes longer to produce on the farm. The premium pays off in lawn density, traffic tolerance, and lower long-term water needs.
